Some 75 % did know Bayer contained aspirin. The researchers are suggesting a remedy: a general icon for labels of medicines including acetaminophen to alert users to its existence. ‘It’s extremely alarming,’ stated Michael Wolf, an associate professor of medication at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medication and senior author of the study published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. ‘People may unintentionally misuse these medications to a point where they cause severe liver harm,’ Wolf said. ‘It’s easy to exceed the secure limit if people don’t realize how much acetaminophen they are acquiring. Unlike prescription products, there is absolutely no gatekeeper, no-one monitoring how you consider it.’ The study, sponsored by Tylenol, says misuse of acetaminophen results in more than 30,000 hospitalizations every full year, and up to two-thirds of overdoses are unintentional – – people aren’t alert to how much they’re supposed to consider, and how often.
